Reiki Healing Therapy: The Basics You Need To Know About This Healing Technique

What Is Reiki Healing Therapy?

Reiki healing therapy is a Japanese relaxation technique. That’s the lament or unintimidating way to describe it, but really, it’s an energy healing technique. Basically, the practitioner gets attuned to a certain energy that we all humans could have access to, but it’s like the switch/valve is off in us.

Getting attuned (which is a ritual we do to turn on that energy) helps that life force, the energy of the universe, flow through us. We use that healing energy that’s infinite and free-flowing to help put into others so that their bodies can take it up and use it to heal in a variety of ways.

The energy’s inherently intelligent, so it will guide itself to where it needs to go in the body, but you’ll see the practitioner will be putting hands over you or just slightly on top of you. It helps give a state of connection between you, the person receiving reiki, and the practitioner.

What Happens In A Reiki Healing Therapy Session?

Reiki healing therapy sessions are usually 30 minutes - one hour long. Initially, the practitioner will have prepped and cleansed the room before you arrive. They’ll have you lay down on your back with your clothes on, usually on a massage bed. Some practitioners use reiki with crystals, so they may put crystals on different chakras points on your body and intuitively feel what works for you.

Once you lay down, they scan your body with your hands to pick up any areas of stagnation or potential areas that may be blocked or need extra work. This helps us to know where to spend more time, in those certain areas, during the session. Some practitioners may place their hands on your body where the chakra points are, or they may just hover their hands over your body and not touch you at all. You can always tell the practitioner what you are comfortable with.

How Does Remote Or Distant Reiki Healing Therapy Work?

Don’t you have to be next to me for it to work? It seems scammy to be able to move energy to another person, who’s across the other side of the world, right?

An easy way to think of it is that we are all fundamentally made up of energy. Our body is a shell that contains our energy, but we’re all connected and we’re all part of the same source of energy. Our energies are all part of the collective. So even if you are in another country, I can tap into your energy and set the intention. I even received my attunement remotely.

We hope this helps you understand the world of reiki healing therapy and maybe you can give it a try! If you're looking for more, check out this article from Mind Body Green.

READER'S QUESTION: "As far as processing emotions, I take in the energy of the room. Many times it shuts me down and makes me feel like hiding. Normal daily routines can become really hard for me if I can’t help or fix someone’s current problems. I seriously don’t know how to keep myself from feeding into everyone’s daily emotions around me. Will this help me learn to not transfer someone’s bad day into my bad day? This truly can make me or break me. And I wish I had control of it more. So I am hoping I learn to ask for the universe’s energy as opposed to depleting everything I have each day. I will push people away in my life if they constantly complain and I can’t fix or help them at that moment. It makes me feel useless and close down. I make up reasons to not be around them, when really it’s me and how I deal with the vibes they give off."

You are not alone. A lot of empaths experience this at some point where they feel the need to save everyone. This actually comes from our own ego. This can put you on a low vibration because you are sacrificing your own sanity, will and power and willingly accepting being drained. When you decide to become a practitioner of any kind, the first thing you need to learn to master is your own shadow and boundary setting with people. You can practice boundary setting with not just people and activities, but in general with the physical world and everybody/everything in it.

A great exercise that we like for boundary setting is imagining a bubble of energy around you that allows you to keep out any energy that is not yours. So if someone comes near you, instead of your oversensitive radar going off, you can tune it out by only allowing your own energy inside. This energy field that you imagine around you can be a bubble of white light, or any other color that makes you feel safe. You can fill it up with imaginary objects that help you feel grounded, safe and strong!

You can do this regularly when you leave the house or even when you wake up in the morning and start your day. In the future, you won’t have to put it up all of the time. It would also help to learn how to physically set boundaries. You can do this by saying things like, “No, I’m so sorry. I don’t have the bandwidth to do that”.

Another great thing that we have discovered and are huge advocates of is therapy! They are trained how to deal with this and how to separate their emotions from their clients. It would be super beneficial to get to the root cause of why you tend to take on everyone’s problems. There may be something from your past that’s causing you to feel this way. But this is all a part of the process of becoming a healer!
